According to the legend, a Frenchman saw an elephant-headed deity in his dream while he was on a voyage to India. When he arrived in Puducherry, he saw the same deity in a small temple and decided to donate money for its renovation. The temple was named Manakula Vinayagar after the elephant that had been seen in the dream.

Another story associated with the temple is that of a boy named Narayana who was born without ears. His parents brought him to the temple and prayed to Lord Ganesha for his blessings. The deity is said to have appeared in a dream to a saint and instructed him to take sand from a particular spot on the seashore and put it in the ears of the child. The boy’s ears were miraculously cured, and the temple gained a reputation as a place of healing.

The temple is known for its beautiful architecture and elaborate carvings. It is believed that the temple was built around 300 years ago by a French missionary. The main deity, Lord Vinayagar, is depicted in a sitting posture, with his trunk turned towards the right. The temple also houses other deities, including Lord Murugan, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Durga.
