Sri Selva Vinayak Temple, Australia

Tamil migration to Queensland is quite recent, starting mainly after 1985. The small Tamil community initially met for worship in homes and later in a hall in Spring Hill from 1983. This led to the need for a dedicated Hindu temple, prompting the formation of a committee in 1986 called ‘Hindu Ahlaya Sangam.’ They worked to raise funds and bought land in 1990 in South Maclean, a scenic area near Brisbane.

The temple construction began in 1993, and the main hall was built first. The temple, named Selva Vinayakar Temple, was completed with traditional Indian designs and opened in 1995. It has a main shrine for Lord Vinayakar and other deities, with various cultural and educational activities also taking place there.

In 2015, the temple was rebuilt and reopened, continuing to serve as a cultural and religious center for the community.
