The Story of Gajanan Avatar
‘Gajanan’ is known for granting spiritual success to those practicing Sankhya Yoga, as he embodies the wisdom of Sankhya and is the destroyer of the demon named ‘Lobhasur’ (Greed). Scholars call this form of Ganesha ‘Mouse Carrier’ because of his vehicle, the mouse.
The Origin of the Gajanan Avatar
Once, the god of wealth, Kubera, went to Mount Kailash to see Lord Shiva, hoping for a vision of him. Goddess Parvati, the mother of the world, was there, and Kubera, enchanted by her beauty, couldn’t take his eyes off her. This angered Shiva, and with an intense gaze, he looked at Kubera, causing the demon Lobhasur to emerge from Kubera’s body.
Lobhasur was powerful and fierce from birth. He fought fiercely with the gods and even defeated them, gaining control over heaven. Indra, the king of gods, fled to Vaikuntha and prayed to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu tried to fight Lobhasur but was forced to retreat due to the demon’s power.
Lobhasur’s confidence grew, and he attacked Mount Kailash with a vast army, thinking he could conquer even Rudra (Shiva). Shiva realized that fighting Lobhasur would be pointless since the demon had a boon making him invincible. So, Shiva sent a message to Lobhasur, offering him an alternative: leave Kailash or face battle.
The Divine Solution
Lobhasur, now uncontested and confident, ordered that no one should perform religious rituals, prayers, or acts of charity, or they would face punishment. This caused chaos and disorder in the world. The gods, sages, and Brahmins were distressed and debated how to end Lobhasur’s tyranny.
The sages concluded that only Lord Ganesha, in his form as Gajanan, could defeat Lobhasur. They worshipped Ganesha with devotion, performing the sixteen-step worship ritual and meditation. Ganesha appeared before them and promised to defeat the demon.
The Defeat of Lobhasur
Lord Ganesha sent Shiva to warn Lobhasur to return what he had taken and abandon his unrighteous ways. If not, Ganesha would destroy him. Lobhasur, understanding that the supreme power of Gajanan was beyond him, went to seek forgiveness with Shiva’s guidance.
The demon apologized and was forgiven by Lord Ganesha, who restored peace to the world. The gods, sages, and Brahmins rejoiced, and praise for Ganesha spread everywhere. The world was filled with happiness and harmony once again.
Lord Gajanan, the master of all beings and the ultimate source of creation, protection, and dissolution, is worshipped for his power to overcome any obstacle and bring peace and joy to the world.
